With some of the most anticipated summer movies already behind us, I couldn't help but look ahead to what else is in store for the big screen. I was most interested in what was yet to come in the next few months, but when I saw that the first trailer for Marley & Me had been released (even though the movie isn't out until December), I rushed to play it.
While I never read the book because I didn't want to bawl my head off, I had been excited about the movie. Until I saw this...
Are you kidding me? That was perhaps the most annoying trailer ever. Don't even make a trailer if it's going to be that lame! Yikes... my expectations have been drastically lowered for this movie...
... As they have been for The Happening. When I first saw a poster for the latest M. Night Shyamalan effort, I was all excited because I have loved all of his movies to date--yes, all of them. But I don't think I'm going to enjoy this one, if I even see it in the theater. He seems to be way too proud of the fact that it's his first R-rated film, and that is bad news to me. The reason I've liked this other movies is because they revolve more around psychological suspense and imagining awful things that are not shown on-screen. So all an R rating means to me is that there will be a lot of gross blood and guts shown, which I am not into at all. Plus, it simply doesn't look scary. Judge for yourself:
It's opening this Friday (the 13th, hee hee), so if any of you go see it, let me know what you think.
Also opening this weekend is The Incredible Hulk, which, solely because of my love for Ed Norton, I know I'll end up seeing. The good news is that the trailer is decent, though I think Liv Tyler as his love interest was really poor casting.
It will be at least a few weeks before I can get out to see the Hulk, though, so if the reviews rip it to shreds, I may have to skip it.
What I really want to know, however, is if any of you out there actually saw Don't Mess with the Zohan?
I figured it would either be really, really, REALLY bad, or hilarious. Inquiring minds want to know!

Two movies I recommend: "The Visitor" and "The Fall." The Visitor is about immigrants in New York befriending a professor from Connecticut. The Fall is a story being told to a little girl in the hospital. It goes back and forth from the present to the story. While it's rated R the violence is minimal. It really should have been PG-13.
Hey E, wait til you see what The Happening is about, it's pretty ridiculous if you ask me. I was really upset about the R rating too. I watched the "Red Band" trailer to see what the R was all about. And you're right. It's all really gross. It's not even that it's blood and guts more just what is going on and how graphic it is. Google the Red Band trailer to see if you're at all interested (Red Band is just a rated R trailer). I know it turned me off completely for that movie. Which is sad, because like you I love ALL his movies.
I saw "The Zohan". The best way to describe it is...umm...well, it's not awful with moments of hilarity? That's it.
It's the funniest Sandler movie in quite some time though. It's way better than the messes that are "Click" and "Mr. Deeds".
I agree with you with respect to The Happening film. I can't speak as to why the "R" rating but it certainly seems it wouldn't need any of the elements of language, nudity, violence in order to pull that plot off. Plus it just reminds me of an old movie Scanners.
The Other E
I loved "The Visitor"! Just wanted to concur with the above peep...
I have to disagree, miss e...I think "The Happening"'s trailer looks tres scary...I don't even know what it's about, but the fact that something can cut us all off from communicating with one another and then something else "happens"...I'm down for it, and I'll let you know!
Now, even though I love horror movies, I can't bring myself to see "The Strangers"...It seems to plausible and I'm jumpy at night with the noises...
I really want to see "DMWTZ"...I LOL everytime I see the trailer on TV...but you are right it could be an instant classic or instant mashed potatoes.
There seems to be a lot of "The..." movies this year...I guess one word will suffice.
My wife and I cracked up when we saw the Happening commercial and they made such a big deal about "His First R-rated Movie." Like that was a good thing?
I thought the Marly & Me trailer was cute, but I'm just really hoping that a lot of people will miss-type Marly & Me into their browsers and end up at Mary Worth & Me.
Hi everyone -
Anon - I have heard great things about "The Visitor," so if I don't catch it in the theater, I will definitely get it in my Netflix queue right away. Hadn't heard of "The Fall," but that one sounds up my alley, too.
JediJohnson - I definitely will NOT be watching the red-band trailer then, I don't like anything graphic at all. But from what you said, the nail is now in the coffin for this movie for me.
CinematicallyCorrect - That's good to know about Zohan. I'll probably Netflix that one too for a good laugh one night. I actually liked Click, so if it's better than that, that's a good sign for me.
The Other E - I haven't seen Scanners, but I guess neither of us will be seeing The Happening to compare it anyway!
Fuzzyhalo - OK, we will all be awaiting your take on The Happening then! And I think you are right on The Strangers. My friend, Nerdy P, who was literally RAISED on horror movies, was totally freaked out by that movie. And you must believe me, NOTHING scares her. So I would stay away from it if I were you. I also thought I read that it was based on a true story, which makes it even worse, but now I can't find where I read that.
Wanders - Ha! I will keep my fingers crossed for you that you will pick up some extra traffic!

My sister saw The Happening over the weekend. I also have liked all his other movies, so I was really curious to hear what she thought about it. I asked her about it yesterday, wanting to hear how gross it was... her initial resonse: "Omigod! do NOT see that movie!!" I said, "why, was it really gross??" and she said, "no, it was just really REALLY bad!!" She explained to me the premise of the movie, and the premise itself sounds too disturbing to me, even if it is not that graphic (which I still don't buy, she has a much stronger stomach for that stuff than I do). She said she was left wondering if M.Night was TRYING to make it funny, or if it was just so ridiculous that it came off as funny. She said it seemed like everyone in the theater felt the same about the movie as she did. So I think I will stay far, far away!
I went to see "The Happening" this week. It wasn't really THAT gross, there was only one scene where I knew what was coming and looked away. My husband and 15 yr old daughter liked it, but the scientist in me thought it needed a better explanation than they gave for "the happening". It was just okay to me.
